From Heritage to Sustainable

The Oldest Area in Jakarta

This area is the oldest part of Jakarta, containing cultural heritage structures such as roads, bridge, and other historical elements, along with both designated and non-designated heritage buildings. It represents a layered and complex urban heritage site with significance at the local, national, and international levels. The area features a variety of historical landmarks, including colonial era buidlings, traditional houses, Chinese temples, Arab-Betawi mosques, and post-independence modernist architecture.

The intangible heritage in this area is equally rich and multicultural, encompassing unique musical traditions and cultural expressions. One notable example is Keroncong music (a blend of Portuguese influence and local culture) which continues to be practiced by the local community today.

Sunda Kelapa Harbor also stands as a symbol of Jakarta's vibrant maritime legacy. Fisherman and sailors still navigate the archipelago using traditional wooden sailing boats, maintaining a living connection to the area's long and stored seafaring history.

This is a mixed-use development that incorporates elements of the original building found on-site. The preserved structure consists of a single-story elongated mass with an arcade at the front.

The original building has been repurposed as a commercial area, with the arcade integrated into the pedestrian zone. A second floor was added above, supportedby a new structural system that does not rely on the existing structure (serving as part of the restoration strategy).

The development comprises a total of 11 building masses. accomodating residential, commercial, and office functions. Each building consists of four floors and is interconnected with the others to create communal spaces that encourage social interaction among residents and visitors.
