Animal Science Learning Center (ASLC) UGM

Design Concept of the Animal Science Learning Center (ASLC) Building

The construction of the Animal Science Learning Center (ASLC) building is an effort to replace the old single-story structure with a multi-story building, designed to be five floors high with one basement floor. This change aims to significantly increase student capacity and add up to 84.35% more green open space compared to the demolished building.

The ASLC building functions as an integrated research facility and learning center for undergraduate through graduate programs. Its main functions include the analysis and development of animal feed and microorganisms, molecular biology analysis, laboratories, and lecture rooms. Specifically, the basement floor is dedicated as a storage area for wet samples, chemicals, and research materials.

Architecturally, the design of the ASLC building emphasizes harmonization with the existing Gadjah Mada University (UGM) design code. The contemporary architectural style is blended with local idioms, such as the limasan (traditional pitched) roof shape with an overhang, a double skin façade that serves as shading to reduce solar radiation, and the use of a traditional stone-finished podium. The entrance lobby block is characterized by a distinguished, elevated open space without walls or windows, ideal for exhibitions and a co-working space.

Accessibility is a key consideration, ensuring user access to the facilities is secured for all, including persons with disabilities. The main entrance is oriented toward the newly developed open space, known as "Plaza Agro." Material access to the semi-basement is facilitated by a ramp way provided on the north side.

From a civil and structural perspective, the design concept adopts the principle of Earthquake Proof design. Although structural damage may occur, the building is designed not to collapse during a major earthquake, allowing for the evacuation process. In the mechanical and electrical fields, the cooling system uses a high-efficiency central system. For water conservation and environmental purposes, the water system is planned to recycle wastewater and reuse rainwater (for instance, for toilet flushing).

Overall, the design of the building, along with the other Package 3 buildings (AGLC and IFFLC), has been evaluated for GREENSHIP Certification by the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) and is projected to achieve a Gold rating. Notably, the AGLC building has officially obtained and received the GREENSHIP Gold Certification from GBCI.
