Advanced Pharmaceutical Sciences Learning Center (APSLC) UGM
The Advanced Pharmaceutical Science Learning Center (APSLC) building is established with the overarching vision of serving as a center of excellence, a driving force for drug discovery and development, and a comprehensive hub for pharmacy learning. The entire project is strategically designed to cultivate an environment that is highly conducive to both learning and research processes, with a strong emphasis on community and industry-driven initiatives. This collaborative spirit is intended to directly contribute to achieving national self-reliance in the field of pharmaceuticals.
Function and Space Requirements
The APSLC's design ingeniously integrates two major functional requirements into a single building mass. Historically, these were planned as separate units: Unit 6, the Laboratory of Drug Discovery and Development, and Unit 7, the Central Administration and Pharmacy Learning Center. The integration of these functions was a deliberate choice to minimize the building's physical footprint on the campus grounds while simultaneously maximizing the amount of surrounding green space. As a result of its consolidation and scale, the structure is designed to be the tallest and largest-volume building within the faculty complex. It is equipped to accommodate high-level research, featuring bio safety level 2 laboratories, interior finishes with anti-chemical and anti-bacterial properties, and dedicated mechanical balconies.
Architectural and Façade Concept
From an architectural standpoint, the design philosophy focused on creating a single, robust, and unified building mass that aligns with the general UGM design code. The strategic application of a double skin façade along the east and west perimeters is a key passive design feature, instrumental in improving the indoor climate and significantly reducing energy consumption by mitigating solar radiation. The main façade, facing south, acts as the building's visual identity, featuring a symbolic glass curtain wall and a prominent see-thru glass elevator shaft, which together firmly establish the APSLC as the faculty's new principal structure. Access to the building is direct from the south side, seamlessly connecting to the central green open space located on the north side of the campus. The structure is internally organized into two functional zones to ensure clear and efficient circulation pathways throughout the integrated facility.
Sustainability Goal (Greenship)
The APSLC demonstrates a deep-seated commitment to sustainability. Its design fully adheres to the UGM Green Building Design Policy and is officially targeting a Gold classification certification under the Indonesian Greenship rating tool. This sustainability goal is fundamentally embedded within the design, with integrated energy efficiency measures, such as the optimized façade, contributing substantially to its projected environmental performance and resource savings, as validated by technical simulations.
